How to make the ID: most species are extremely small and thin; look like a worm and wiggle when out of water; adults look like small mosquitoes, males have fuzzy antennae

Its Color: brown, green, and tan to black

How it reproduces: female deposits a gelatin-like mass of eggs on the water surface or attaches it to submerged vegetation.

Metamorphosis: Complete

Its food: mostly algae and other organic debris; many feed on other insect larvae.

Indicator: most are indicators of poor water quality

Size: up to 1/2 inch
