Bibb County School District

ACCESS Distance Learning

Summer School 2010

Program Purpose:

The Bibb County School District is committed to preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s world.  The summer school program is an extension of the regular academic program and is designed to allow students in grades 9-12 to advance or make up credit.  The summer school program is a privilege and should be treated as such.  Due to the time restraints of the program, administrators, teachers and facilitators do not have time to deal with discipline problems. When a student enters summer school, he/she has the responsibility to control behavior so that maximum learning may take place.  The summer school administrator and/or facilitator reserve(s) the right to dismiss any unruly student from the program.

Students will be afforded 150 clock hours (5 hours daily) of instruction in order to receive credit. For students who have failed to achieve a passing grade average for a course during the regular school year, the summer school grade for the course shall determine pass/fail, i.e., no averaging of summer school grades with regular academic year grades (Bibb County Schools Student Policies File JFH).

Students are expected to be courteous, studious and punctual since these qualities contribute to a good work ethic.  All rules and regulations of the Bibb County Schools Code of Conduct are in effect.  The summer school administrator, facilitator and/or teacher may impose additional rules.  Any additional rules will be printed and distributed as a supplement to this document.

General Rules:

1. Limited transportation will be provided - based on need. All transportation programs shall be operated in

accordance with provisions of The Code of Alabama and State Board of Education rules and regulations.

The policies listed in the Bibb County Schools Code of Conduct shall be followed by students being

transported via Board-owned vehicles, including the activity buses.

2. Students who disrupt the educational program will be dismissed from the program.

3. The summer school administrator and/or facilitator will have the authority to dismiss any student from

    the program.

4. All students must have written permission from their home school principal to obtain

credit for summer classes prior to registration.

5. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost; snacks may be purchased during break.

Attendance Policy:

No credit will be awarded for students who miss more than 10 hours (2 days) or portions thereof.  Tardiness to school and class will count against the 5-hour rule. Each tardy will count as 1 hour.  Students checked out of class before 12:30 P.M. may be considered tardy or absent depending on the time of checkout.  Tardiness disrupts the educational process and creates a loss of instructional time.  The administrator, facilitator and/or teacher will consider and may approve tardies/absences on a case-by-case basis. Only a student’s custodial parent, guardian or person specifically designated by the student’s custodial parent or guardian may come to school in person to check his/her child out of school – NO EXCEPTIONS!

Financial Concerns:

Students may earn credit for make-up at no cost to the students; however, space is limited. The cost per course for credit to advance is $200.00 for in-county students.  The cost for out-of-county students for make-up credit or credit to advance is $400.00.

The program exists to serve the needs of the students of Bibb County and is not mandated by the State Department of Education.

Students may not attend classes until tuition is paid.  Tuition is non-refundable. No refund will be given to students who are withdrawn from summer school for attendance or disciplinary reasons.
