The BCCTC has a planned
program of Counseling and Guidance modeled after the Alabama State Plan.
There are four components to the Counseling Program. These include 1)
Guidance Curriculum; 2) Individual Planning; 3) Responsive Services; and 4)
System Support.
In the Career/Technical School many of the facets of the guidance
curriculum are provided within the Career Tech programs in the school,
within other core courses in the basic curriculum, and in guidance classes
provided by the counselor and other resource people. The purpose of the
curriculum is to provide an opportunity for students to acquire skills in
decision making, self understanding, career exploration and career
preparation.
A second component of the guidance program, individual planning, is
provided for all students in the form of appraisal, individual advisement
and placement, and follow-up.
Responsive services are delivered through consultation, personal
counseling, crisis counseling, and referral services.
Finally, system support includes indirect management to enhance the
guidance program.
All components of the comprehensive guidance program are designed to
remove obstacles to learning and to facilitate healthy growth and
development of students during their high school years and to provide a map
for transition to future training and/or employment.
The counselor provides many services for the Magnet School that began
as a drop-out prevention project. The program is designed to provide
students a chance to make up lost credits in order to graduate with their
class. The career tech counselor provides in-take services to students
referred by their high school counselor or principal. Then, with the
director, the Magnet School teacher, student and parents, plans a program of
study leading to graduation. Finally, the counselor provides monitoring,
counseling, and follow-up with students to smooth the transition back to
their home school or to post-high school training or employment.
Mrs.
Ruth Watts serves as guidance
counselor. |
